Shawnee Mission Wraps Up Enriching Summer

It was a summer full of exploration and discovery for hundreds of children who attended Summer Enrichment in the Shawnee Mission School District.

The program offered a variety of interactive classes designed to promote creativity, problem-solving, and passion for new skills. Educators created the classes to help children engage in activities they are interested in learning more about or acquire new skills they may not have had the opportunity to explore on their own.

Throughout the program, students were testing science experiments, learning about nature, playing games in sports and recreation class, creating their own artwork, performing musicals and plays, and more.

“It’s a place where students can be themselves, engage in activities they are passionate about, learn about new things, and build new relationships,” Misty Miles, Summer Enrichment Principal said. “It’s a great combination between the setting of school and fun learning environment of a camp.”

This year, the Shawnee Mission School District introduced new summer STEAM courses at the Center for Academic Achievement (CAA), which were offered to help sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders learn about Signature Programs for high school students offered at the CAA. Each Friday included an Open House event, which gave students a chance to share with families members and friends what they had learned throughout the week.
