SM Northwest Boasts Strong BPA, Sales Competition Success

BPA National Qualifiers

Shawnee Mission Northwest students traveled to Wichita to compete in the State Business Professionals of America (BPA) competition, in late February. 

There, multiple students qualified for national competition:  Jordan Glanville, Naeley Torline, Michael Owens, Lincoln Bartelt, Chris Ramsey, Roosevelt Tuwei, Brogan McKenzie, Luke Aitken, Lee Ball and Jeffrey Russell.  

Business Professionals of America is the nation’s leading CTSO (Career and Technical Student Organization) for students pursuing careers in business management, information technology, finance, accounting, office administration, and other business-related career fields.

Michael Owens was elected as State BPA President, along with Lincoln Bartelt being elected Vice-President.  Both will represent the state at various events throughout the year and will lead the state BPA organization for the 2020-2021 season.

Jordan Glanville and Naeley Torline received top scholarships awarded to seniors. Luke Aitken, Lee Ball, Lincoln Bartelt, Jordan Glanville, Michael Owens, Jeffrey Russell, and Naeley Torline earned Statesman awards.

The 2020 National BPA Leadership competition was to take place in Washington DC May 6-9, but was canceled due to COVID-19.


Strategic Selling Institute Competition

Cameron Ferencz, senior at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School, placed second in the very first high school sales competition hosted by the National Strategic Selling Institute at the Kansas State University College of Business in February.

Cullan Bower, junior, Benjamin Groebe, senior, and Brady King, junior also competed at the inaugural event.  The team is led by SMNW Marketing teacher, Beth Johnstone.

This program introduces students to the fundamentals of sales and through innovative curriculum and sales labs to help students to develop the skills needed to be successful.

“It was a great opportunity to host young talent on campus while showcasing their skills in events very similar to that of which college students participate,” stated Kellie Jackson, managing director of the National Strategic Selling Institute.

This competition was designed to be a learning experience and spark a student's interest in pursuing a career in sales.
