A work of art and science, created by a Shawnee Mission South junior, is being recognized by professionals throughout the Kansas City metro.
Katie Swann, the student artist, created an artistic representation of a science project she conducted to measure bacteria. It is now being featured as part of the BioNexusKC Science to Art platform.
Her project was conducted as part of a Biology 1 course with James Wannamaker, SM South science teacher. She also worked with an external mentor, Dr. Carl Gelhaus, a principal scientist and national expert in infectious diseases at MRI Global.
“Katie is a great student and has a very bright future in whatever she decides to pursue,” Wannamaker said. “It is awesome to see her work honored in this way.”
Her selected work will be on display at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and at an upcoming BioNexusKC annual dinner. This program features professional scientists from all over Kansas City who work in universities, medical centers, and private research companies. Proceeds from this “Art to Science” platform will support regional STEAM activities.
“Each of these remarkable images tells a personal research story and poetically captures the fieldwork performed by scientists and their teams,” states the BioNexus KC Science to Art website.
