Summer Reading Kicks Off for Elementary Students

Summer Reading
Shawnee Mission School District

Shawnee Mission librarians have collaborated with the Johnson County (JoCo) Public library and created a website of library resources for summer reading.

“Our Johnson County Public Library does amazing things for our community of readers and we are lucky to work with them from returning each other’s library books to promoting summer reading,” Emily Mihelic, Brookwood librarian shared.

The JoCo Public Library got creative under current circumstance and found safe ways to promote and encourage summer reading.

The JoCo Public Library will virtually launch its summer reading program June 1-5. On the website you can:

  • get a library card
  • access e-books
  • participate in virtual learning
  • join online summer programs including story times, writing workshops, and more

You can access it here: https://sites.google.com/smsd.org/smsdsummerresources/home

“We hope all our students will continue reading over the summer alone, aloud, and together with family members,” Mihelic said. She encourages students to read whatever they can get their hands on, whether it is reading a picture book to a younger sibling or a chapter book from a home bookshelf.

“Whether it is an old favorite, eBook, or audio book just keep reading!”
