The Shawnee Mission Education Foundation Funds Excellence in Education Grants

The Shawnee Mission Education Foundation announced the Excellence in Education Grants for the 2019-2020 school year this week. These grants are offered to help foster innovative and challenging learning experiences in the Shawnee Mission School District.

The Foundation announced 14 grants that will support outstanding educators in elementary, middle and high school classrooms. Click here to see a complete list of the funded grants.

Barbara Schoell, program committee chair on the Foundation board, assisted Kimberly Hinkle, executive director of the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation, with the recognition of the grants at the May 13 Board of Education meeting.

Schoell shared the grants will support such diverse projects as camera lenses, school gardens, LEGO machines, and a Special Education Life Skills Classroom. She thanked the grant recipients for going above and beyond to bring these projects to our students.

“I would like to thank the generosity of community members who make these grants possible and funded more than $35,000 in grants,” Hinkle said.

Hinkle recognized the Mainstreet Credit Union’s Jack Chalender Legacy Fund for supporting a grant for Sphero Bolt Power Pack Robots. She thanked the Diane Lane Hughes Forever Friends Fund for their support of the Diving into Diverse Books grant.

“Tonight was a celebration and an opportunity to honor our outstanding educators. We appreciate all you do for the students in the Shawnee Mission School District,” Hinkle said.

“Thank you to the Shawnee Mission community for making innovative learning a priority for our students,” said Dr. Mike Fulton, superintendent. “We deeply appreciate our partnership with the Foundation, which makes these opportunities a reality for our educators and students.”

Prior to the board meeting, the Foundation hosted a reception for grant recipients, supporting principals, and the family members of the recipients.
