Two Shawnee Mission Vocalists are KC SuperStar Finalists

Emma Mathieson, Shawnee Mission West, incoming senior, and Alexa Morgan, Shawnee Mission South, incoming senior, are finalists in the Top Ten of the KC SuperStar competition.

As finalists, they are invited perform on Sunday, August 25 at Yardley Hall at the Johnson County Community College.

Mathieson writes and sings her own music. She performed her original song, “Don’t Go Away,” in an assembly at SM West during National Suicide Prevention Week. She wrote the song for her sister-in-law who experienced the suicide of a loved one. The song has been made into a music video by SM West student videographers and shared by the #ZeroReasonsWhy suicide prevention campaign.

Morgan will be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Musical Theatre in college.

“Singing has always been a passion of mine, in my house, my car, my shower, pretty much anywhere,” Morgan said.

She has participated in musical theater at multiple venues around Kansas City, including Theatre in the Park, where she played Ariel in “Disney’s The Little Mermaid” last summer. Morgan is very active in the chorale and theater department at Shawnee Mission South.

Audience members will select the KC SuperStar winner via electronic voting. Total scholarship and prize money exceeds $22,000 with first place receiving a $10,000 Edward and Ellen Rose Scholarship and the title of KC SuperStar 2019.

This is the tenth year of KC SuperStar, an “American Idol” style competition. More than 200 students from the Kanas City metro audition and compete to make it to the finals.
