Feb. 17 is Founders’ Day for National PTA, a day the organization marks to celebrate its three founders, Alice McLellan Birney, Phoebe Apperson Hearst, and Selena Sloan Butler. The first convocation of what would later become the PTA met on Feb. 17, 1897.
Kansas formed its first PTA charter in 1914. The Shawnee Mission Area Council of PTA was first organized with three units in October of 1922. It now serves as a council of 44 PTA units.
Hundreds of individuals serve in Shawnee Mission to support the educational success of children and promote family engagement in schools. Volunteers dedicate countless hours to support school students, staff, programs and celebrations, participate in school advocacy, donate and organize items to address basic student needs, and engage students in artistic expression, and much more.
