Shawnee Mission School District leaders are getting ready to welcome students on the first day of the 2019-2020 school year.
As they prepared for the opening of school, school and district directors, coordinators, and principals gathered for a two-day Leadership Retreat at the Center for Academic Achievement.
The retreat focused on the district’s Strategic Plan, and how all Shawnee Mission schools will be working toward achieving the three Strategic Plan objectives, which state that every student will:
- achieve academic success through a challenging, relevant personalized learning plan.
- develop and utilize personal resilience while mastering essential competencies that lead to college and career readiness.
- develop interpersonal skills to be an engaged, empathetic member of the local and global community
“All of our work during this retreat is to help us move forward so that every student can achieve these three objectives,” Dr. Mike Fulton, superintendent said. “This work is meant to translate into action for students.”
The first day of the retreat was focused on the Strategic Plan. School principals, assistant principals, and administrative interns had time during the day to work on the first steps toward aligning their school improvement plans with the district’s strategic plan.
The retreat also provided opportunities for professional development. All attendees took part in Civil Rights training, which focused on the first amendment rights of students. During the second day of the retreat, leaders received Deep Equity training, presented by Corwin Equity Professional Development.
The Board of Education approved the Corwin professional development contract in April of this year. The training, which aligns with beliefs identified in the district’s strategic plan, is designed to apply directly back to student learning. Every staff member in the district will receive training on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
This week, SMSD will welcome new teachers to the district. Returning teachers will be back next week, and students will return the week of August 12 to begin the new school year. Click here to see the 2019-2020 calendar.
