The Shawnee Mission Education Foundation kicked-off its second year of Leadership Shawnee Mission, a leadership development program for incoming juniors and seniors. The program combines 42-hour internship experience with 48 hours of classroom curriculum.

Kimberly Hinkle, Executive Director for the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation, welcomed 22 students to a classroom at the Center for Academic Achievement. These students were nominated by a faculty member to participate in this program.

“We had more than 100 nominations and have doubled our class-size this year which is very exciting,” Hinkle said. “We have 22 students who will be interning at 20 different sites including AdventHealth, REACH Healthcare Foundation, ACI/Boland Architects, Newkirk Novak Construction Partners and many others.”

The Foundation has partnered with William Jewell College and the Pryor Center for Leadership Development. Al Leone is the Director of the Tucker Leadership Lab. “It is so rewarding to watch the class become a community to support each other as they learn life and leadership skills during this three-week workshop,” Leone said.

The students have eight days of curriculum that includes modules on Financial Literacy, Communication and Leadership using “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens” by Sean Covey as a resource. They will spend two days at the William Jewell Tucker Leadership Lab on their grounds and tower course. The Tucker Leadership Lab is one of the premiere team building and leadership courses in the Midwest.

The remainder of their sessions are spent at onsite internships where they were matched with their career interest including the fields of healthcare, engineering and animation.

“I was really struck by everyone’s openness,” Jasmine Hogue, Shawnee Mission South student said. “This group respects your truth without judging you and I like that.”

The Foundation will host a lunch with their Corporate Council members and the interns at the conclusion of Leadership Shawnee Mission. Families of the students will also be invited to attend graduation on the final afternoon.
