The top spellers from across the country will soon put their skills to the test at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
This year, two Shawnee Mission School District students will be among the 565 competitors.
Mira McInnes, a fourth-grader from Corinth Elementary School, and Ishya Bhavsar, a sixth-grader from Briarwood Elementary School, will enter the national bee, which will be held in Washington, D.C. The competition begins on May 27 with a preliminaries test.
More than 11 million spellers took part in local spelling bees for the opportunity to qualify for a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, according to the bee’s website. The bee champion is presented with a $40,000 prize, a Scripps National Spelling Bee engraved trophy, a U.S. savings bond, and reference materials.
