Groups of Shawanoe students and their family members were greeted on Saturday by some special guests who wanted to let them know how excited they were to see them on the first day of school.

Shawanoe Principal Dominic Flora, teachers, and community partners traveled throughout the Shawanoe community to greet families, talk about getting ready for school, and give away some school supplies.

It is a school tradition that sets the school up for success for the year, Flora said.  The most important result is that it helps teachers build relationships with students and their family members.

“It’s just amazing to see students, staff, and community partners visiting and connecting in an informal way,” Flora said. “The most enjoyable part is reconnecting with our students and their family members, seeing how much the students have grown, and showing them how much we truly care and want them back at school.”

Community partners were vital to the event’s success, Flora said. Westlake Ace Hardware’s office in Lenexa, Community Impact Church, New City Church, and several staff members in collaboration with their family members provided school supplies and dedicated time to make the event a success.

“We love engaging in events like this because our relationships with our students and families are so very important in helping us positively impact our students every day,” Flora said.
