Recommended Instruments for Beginning Band

The following list represents the quality band instruments recommended by the Shawnee Mission Instructional teaching staff. The accessories for instruments arelisted as required or optional. 

Beginning band students are expected to provide their own instruments if playing one of these instrument types. A limited number of other instruments are availalbe for rent from the school district, including French horn, baritone/euphonium, and tuba. 

Students interested in playing one of these should first consult with their band teacher.

Clarinet & Saxophone Policy

Students wishing to play saxophone will first begin on the clarinet. After mastering the following performance criteria on clarinet the student can then switch to saxophone with teacher approval:

1. Cross the break smoothly,

2. Demonstrate adequate playing skills in the upper register,  

3. Successfully perform an evaluation piece selected by the teacher.
