The mission of the Shawnee Mission English Language Learner (ELL) Program is to serve, advocate for, and assist in the cultural adaptation of English language learners and their families. The ELL staff, educators, parents, and community will work with the students to improve their social, linguistic, academic, and/or vocational skills, so that they may become contributing members of society and the global community.

La misión del Programa de estudiantes de Inglés como Segundo Idioma (ELL) del Distrito Escolar Shawnee Mission es servir, abogar, y asistir a familias para que puedan adaptarse a la cultura en los Estados Unidos como estudiantes del idioma Inglés. El personal de ELL, maestros, padres, y la comunidad trabajarán con los estudiantes para mejorar las habilidades  sociales, lingüísticas, académicas, y/o vocacional,  para que los estudiantes  puedan ser miembros contribuyentes en el servicio a la sociedad y comunidad global.​ 

Who are ELL students?

Sixty-eight percent of students attending our ELL program (learning the English language) are in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade, 31 percent are in high school. Pre-kindergarten through second grade students represent 34 percent of the total.

Our students speak 81 languages, 77 percent speak Spanish. After Spanish, the most common language they speak is Chinese and Arabic.

This year, we have a new record of 3,172 ELL students enrolled in Shawnee Mission.

Quienes Son Estudiantes de ELL?

68 por ciento de nuestros estudiantes que están atendiendo nuestro programa ELL (aprendiendo el idioma inglés) están en pre-kínder hasta sexto grado, 31 por ciento están en la secundaria. Pre-kínder hasta segundo grado representan el 34 por ciento del total.
