High School Summer Academy
High School Summer Academy classes are similar to regular school year classes students take at their home school. For courses required for graduation or advancement, student and parent should consult with their high school counselor prior to enrollment. Core classes and Financial Literacy are for credit recovery only. Students must enroll in the corresponding semester in which the course credit is required. Students may enroll in one class per semester. Some courses may be taught online through Edgenuity. Please see our Summer Academy brochure for further information and course options.

- Transportation is NOT provided.
- In District students: $170.00 per semester
- Art Class: $205.00 per semester (includes art fee)
- Out of District: $215.00 per semester (PE courses only)
- Tuition includes textbook rental and parking.

Semester 2 2018 Enrollment
Please read carefully. Summer enrollment begins on February 20. These classes will fill quickly; enroll and pay early. If space is available, enrollment for semester 2 will be accepted until June 22 at 3:30 p.m. SMSD incoming freshmen enrolling in Health Education or Intro to Studio Art must enroll by June 1, 2018. No enrollments accepted after these dates.
Where to Enroll 2018
SMSD Students must be actively enrolled in a Shawnee Mission high school and should enroll in Summer Academy courses at their high school counseling office. Students must pay for the course at the time of enrollment to their high school bookkeeper or online in eFunds fee payment. Students may also enroll and pay through open enrollment at their high school on February 20 during normal office hours. Full payment is required at time of enrollment.** Please contact your high school counseling office for further information.
Non-SMSD Students may only enroll in Foundations of PE or Team Games and should pay at the Summer Programs office, or may download the enrollment form and mail with check to attention of Charlene Simmons at Broadmoor. Current non-district eighth graders who have enrolled in a Shawnee Mission high school next year may enroll as above for SMSD students in Foundations of PE or Team Games only. All other courses will not be available for non-SMSD students. Full payment is required at time of enrollment.** Please make checks payable to Shawnee Mission School District.
**Payment is required at the time of enrollment. Payment not received within 24 hours will remove student from the course. We cannot accept partial payments or payment plans.
A health history form and physician signed Certificate of Immunizations is required for all non-district and new SMSD students. Registration is not complete until these are received in the Summer Programs office BEFORE class begins. Students may not attend class unless these forms are on file.
The Summer Programs office is located at Broadmoor Technical Center, 6701 W. 83rd St. Enrollment hours are 7:30 a.m.-12:00 noon and 1:00-3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. In keeping with district security policy, please enter the main entrance and ask for the Summer Programs office.
Credit by Examination is not allowed. Auditing is allowed if indicated at time of enrollment and payment.
Minimum Class Size/Cancellation of Classes
A minimum number of students is required for each course to be offered. Early enrollment and payment is strongly advised to assure placement. Staffing is based on enrollment needs and students will be notified if a class must be canceled due to insufficient enrollment.
SMSD students who enroll in Academy courses requiring technology before the end of the school year will retain their SMSD MacBook for Summer Academy use. Proof of enrollment and payment will need to be provided to the student's home school at the time of device check-in. If a student enrolls after device check-in, they will need to contact their school’s administrator before June 22 with proof of enrollment and payment to check out their device. SMSD incoming freshmen enrolling in Health Education or Intro to Studio Art must enroll by June 1 for either semester. After these dates, enrollments cannot be accepted nor devices provided. The Responsible Use Policy and Acceptable Use Policy is still in effect for Summer Academy. The same Damage Device Structure is in effect as during the normal school year.
Withdrawal & Refund Policy 2018
Summer Academy is financially self-supported through student tuition. Fees are NOT refunded if credit is lost due to excessive absences, failure to appear for class, or poor quality work. If a student is withdrawn from a class for any reason (other than the class is canceled), they will be charged a 20% cancellation fee. There are no refunds after the deadline date. A written or email request from the parent is required for a withdrawal or refund to email@example.com.

• Last day to request a second semester refund: June 11, 2018
• No refund if you enroll after the refund dates.

Attendance Policy 2018
Students enrolled in credit courses must maintain regular attendance. The accelerated schedule of Summer Academy requires frequent assessment. A loss of credit will result if a student exceeds the maximum absence limit of two days. Students should not enroll in a summer school semester if they know that they will miss more than two days of class for camps, vacations, etc. Cheer, dance, sports, or any types of camps are not allowed as a substitute for physical activity, attendance or credit for any course.
If a student fails to show up for class and the parent has not called, the attendance center will call home. One absence may be waived under the following circumstances only: Court date, medical illness (with doctor's note), or death of immediate family member. All waivers must include documentation. Waivers will only be accepted on the third day of absence.
7:00 - 7:15 a.m. = Tardy (students report directly to class)
7:16 - 10:00 a.m. = 1/2-day absence (late arrival)
10:01 a.m. - 12:00 Noon = 1/2-day absence (leave early)
If student leaves before 10:00 a.m. = Full day absence
Student not returning from 1st break = Full day absence
Student not returning from 2nd break = Half day absence
A registered school nurse is on duty to provide needed services, including the administering of all medications. Please inform her of any special needs your child may have. Final Exams 2018
In keeping with the Shawnee Mission Board of Education policy, all students are required to take a final examination. The final exam will be given on the last day of each semester from 8:00 - 9:30 a.m. All students must be in attendance on that day. NO OTHER EXCEPTIONS.
First Day of Class
Students who are enrolled must report to the mall area at SM Northwest by 6:50 a.m. to locate their classroom. Rosters and room numbers will be posted and administrators will be on duty to help guide students to the correct location. Students should bring laptop if required, paper and pencil the first day. PE students should dress appropriately and ready for physical activity.
SMSD parents may view assignments and grades in Skyward Family Access if they have an account. District student grades will be transcripted at the end of the summer. A transcript will be sent to the non-district student’s high school at the end of the summer sessions.
Student Parking 2018
Parking is included in your tuition. All students who drive and park on campus should park in designated student parking areas only in the west student parking lot on the swimming pool side of the building. Students are to drive in a safe and prudent manner when entering and exiting the campus. Failure to do so may result in parking privileges being taken away.
