Attendance Policy

Attendance Policy - Summer Academy

Students enrolled in credit courses must maintain regular attendance. The accelerated schedule of Summer Academy requires frequent assessment. A loss of credit will result if a student exceeds the maximum absence limit of two days. Students should not enroll in a summer school session if they know that they will miss more than two days of class for camps, vacations, etc. Cheer, dance, sports, or any types of camps are not allowed as a substitute for physical activity, attendance or credit for any course.

If a student fails to show up for class and the guardian has not called, the attendance center will call home. One absence may be waived under the following circumstances only: court date, medical illness (with doctor's note), or death of immediate family member. All waivers must include documentation. Waivers will only be accepted on the third day of absence.

7:00 - 7:15 a.m. = Tardy (students report directly to class)
7:16 - 10:00 a.m. = 1/2-day absence (late arrival)
10:01 a.m. - 12:00 Noon = 1/2-day absence (leave early)
If student leaves before 10:00 a.m. = Full day absence
Student not returning from 1st break = Full day absence
Student not returning from 2nd break = Half day absence

A registered school nurse is on duty to provide needed services, including the administering of all medications. Please inform her of any special needs your child may have. A health history form and proof of immunizations is required for all new SMSD students who are enrolled in a SMSD high school for fall. Registration is not complete and students may not attend class until these forms are updated in Skyward or received in the Summer Programs office before class begins. Please fax (913-993-9435) or email forms to the Summer Programs office secretary.
