Transfer Procedures

Any new request to transfer outside of the home school attendance area must be submitted using Skyward Family Access. Please note that the process has changed and there are two separate transfer request windows. The first for students currently enrolled in grades K-11 and a later window for incoming kindergarten students. Students, in good standing, who are currently attending on transfer and wish to continue at the same school do not need to reapply.

For SMSD students currently enrolled in grades K-11 for the 20-21 school year -The custom form to request transfer for the 2021-2022 school year will automatically open in Skyward Family Access at 12 a.m. on March 1, 2021 and will automatically close at 11:59 p.m. on April 30, 2021.

Barring unforeseen circumstances, transfer decisions will be communicated by the Office of Leadership and Learning no later than June 18.

For SMSD students entering kindergarten for the 21-22 school year - The custom form to request transfer for the 2021-2022 school year will automatically open in Skyward Family Access at 12 a.m. on July 7 and must be completed by July 19 at 11:59 p.m. to be considered in the initial approval period. The form will remain open through August 2 and additional transfers will be granted as classroom space allows. Prior to completing the form, you MUST first complete the enrollment process in your home school through the online enrollment portal.  Families submitting kindergarten enrollment applications after school offices close on June 3 will need to email Shelly Trenholm upon the submission of your enrollment application to finalize enrollment. Once enrollment is processed, you will be able to submit a transfer application.

Barring unforeseen circumstances, initial transfer decisions will be communicated by the Office of Leadership and Learning the week of July 30 and any subsequent transfer notifications by the week of August 6.

For students NOT RESIDING within the SMSD boundaries - SMSD does not accept new Out-of-District transfer requests unless your student resides in Kansas AND meets one of the following criteria:

●      is a sibling of an existing transfer student  currently in good standing.

●      is a dependent of a current and continuing SMSD employee

If your student meets the criteria, please send an email to Shelly Trenholm (K-6) or Melissa Moore (7-12) providing your student’s name, birthdate, grade level for the 21-22 school year, confirmation that you meet the OOD criteria for consideration, and a contact number. Shelly or Melissa will contact you regarding your request and the process and timeline moving forward.
