Transfer Procedures

Any new request to transfer outside of the home school attendance area must be submitted through the Office of Leadership and Learning.

If your transfer request has been initiated by a change of address, please contact your student's current school for instructions on how to apply for a transfer. 

If you are requesting a transfer for other reasons, you must go through the annual transfer window.  For SMSD students currently enrolled in grades K-11, incoming Kindergarten students starting in 2026-2027 who reside in SMSD, and children of SMSD employees, the next application window will be open from 12:00 a.m. December 1, 2025 to 11:59 p.m. on January 16, 2026.  This in-district transfer window will apply to the 2026-2027 school year. 

If you are applying for a transfer during the in-district window, your student must be fully enrolled in order for you to access the transfer application on Skyward. In order for your transfer request to be considered, the Office of Leadership and Learning must receive the following before the window closes:

  • a complete enrollment for your student
  • a submitted transfer application through Skyward
  • school records 
    • must be for the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 school years, including all quarters
    • must be sent directly from the previous school to TransferRecords@smsd.org
    • must include grades, itemized attendance, and discipline records
      • if there is no discipline record, have school send confirmation of no discipline record

It is the parent's/guardian's responsibility to ensure that the Office of Leadership and Learning has received all of the required transfer materials before the window closes.  The Office of Leadership and Learning will not send notifications for incomplete records and incomplete applications will not be considered.

Barring unforeseen circumstances, in-district transfer approvals and denials will be communicated by the Office of Leadership and Learning no later than February 13, 2026.
 

Students in good standing who are currently attending on transfer and wish to continue at the same school do not need to reapply.


Please note the following schools are not accepting transfer requests for the 26-27 school year due to high enrollment:

  • Belinder Elementary
  • Briarwood Elementary
  • Brookridge Elementary
  • Corinth Elementary
  • Highlands Elementary
  • Prairie Elementary
  • Tomahawk Elementary 
  • Westwood View Elementary
  • Indian Hills Middle School
