My Volunteer Pal (MVP) Information

My Volunteer Pal (MVP) program is the volunteer program for all Shawnee Mission Schools. MVP connects adult volunteers with students ages Pre-kindergarten to age 18. Volunteer Pals choose from a range of in-school activities, including:

  • Mentoring
  • Serving as a lunch buddy
  • Classroom or school volunteer
  • Sharing special talents or career interests
  • Tutoring
  • Being a friend who listens
  • Overnight chaperones for USD approved field trips
  • Chat ‘n Chew
  • Watch Dogs
  • School field trips

Volunteers enjoy flexible schedules, and all activities take place on school grounds during school hours, with the exception of field trips.

There are two types of volunteer groups:
Tier I MVPs
, volunteer in a capacity in which they have direct and regular contact with students, either individually or in groups.

  • Complete an application (available online)
  • Attend a short training that covers important areas including standards of conduct, importance of maintaining confidentiality, etc.
  • Acknowledge they have received the training by signing the standards of conduct form
  • Complete a fingerprint background screen.
  • Are trained and screened free of charge

Tier II MVPs, volunteer in one-time, group supervised settings, or in non-student contact capacity. Examples include: classroom party volunteer or committee volunteer.

Tier II volunteers are coordinated directly at the school through the general visitor process. The district has implemented visitor management systems at each building in the district. These systems do basic screenings for anyone coming into the building.
