Adding Alt Text to Images

Images help tell a story, but if they are not accessible, some people won't get the full message. This includes individuals who use screen readers, have low vision, or rely on text-only tools.

Making images accessible is quick and easy. It only takes a few extra seconds.

Alternative Text (Alt Text)

Alt text is a concise description of images and graphics that is an essential part of making content accessible.

Alt Text:

  • Explains what is shown and why it matters
  • Can be read aloud by screen readers for individuals who can’t see the image
  • Replaces the image if it fails to load properly, such as in the following example of a missing image:

Tips for Writing Alt Text

  • Keep it short and specific. Usually 1-2 sentences.
  • Consider key elements of why you chose this image. Describe what is essential to understanding the content.
  • No need to say "picture of" or "image of."
  • Do say if it's a logo, illustration, or painting
  • If text appears in the image, include it in the alt text or main body content.
